Research and Development
For more than a century, Will & Hahnenstein has been synonymous with thermal and material-handling equipment across all sectors of the process industry. This experience forms the foundation upon which we continuously drive innovation. As a result, we not only develop proven solutions but also consistently create new concepts for challenges for which no suitable standard solution has yet been found.
Product and Melting Tests with Customer Materials

Every application is different—that’s why we don’t rely solely on calculations and empirical data. At our facility in Herdorf, we conduct product and melting tests directly using our customers’ materials. Whether it’s fats, waxes, resins, or other temperature-sensitive substances, we test under realistic conditions to see how each product behaves when heated, melted, or dried, and use these results to determine the optimal design for heating capacity, temperature control, and system configuration.
These tests give our customers confidence—even before they make an investment—that the future system will function reliably—and provide us with valuable insights that are directly incorporated into our development work. Likewise, with our assistance, customers can test new products for their thermal properties and processability.
Continuous Improvement
At Will & Hahnenstein, research and development are not a one-time project, but an integral part of our daily work. Feedback from test series, our service department, and direct exchanges with our customers is continuously incorporated into the optimization of existing product lines—in terms of insulation, airflow, control technology, and the energy efficiency of our systems. The goal is to make our systems more robust, more economical, and even better tailored to the individual requirements of the process industry.

Our latest development: the utility model-protected vibrating plate heating chamber (funded by ZIM)

A notable result of this development work is our new, patented vibrating-plate heating chamber. It combines targeted vibration with precise heat input, thereby revolutionizing the melting of cores in barrels: Thanks to the combined vibration and heating technology, the product that has solidified inside the barrel dissolves and melts noticeably faster and more evenly than with purely thermal processes. This not only reduces process times but also preserves both the material and the barrels while lowering energy consumption.
This new development exemplifies how we work at Will & Hahnenstein: We listen to our customers, test new approaches in-house, and turn them into market-ready, patented solutions “Made in Germany”—for the heating technology of tomorrow.
